Disability pride is celebrating all the incredible things we can do—and not feeling like a burden because of the things we can’t. It’s existing in spaces that not only fit our needs but are built to fit our needs and designed for us to thrive. It’s trying new things, seeing that we’re not alone, and facing challenges with optimism, not fear.

Disability Pride is meant to honor the history, experiences, contributions, struggles, and most important of all, the humanity of individuals encompassing diverse abilities. The original Disability Pride flag was created in 2019 by writer Ann Magill, who has cerebral palsy.

As we step into July, it’s time to celebrate Disability Pride Month—a special time to honor the history, culture, and achievements of individuals with disabilities. This month is all about visibility, awareness, supporting one another, and, most importantly, celebrating our collective abilities.
